Ultrarunner William SichelThe inaugural Commonwealth Ultra Distance & Mountain Running Championships took place in Keswick in September and William Sichel competed in the 24 hour race, producing a distance of 133 miles.

William, who lives in the Orkney Islands, has a demanding training regime which incorporates PowerLung, a respiratory training system designed to strengthen breathing muscles.

PowerLung is a drug-free breath training aid which increases lung capacity and improves breath control. Athlete’s performances during training and racing can be significantly affected by breathlessness and breathing discomfort however, PowerLung improves the strength and endurance of the muscles used when breathing enabling athletes to increase their oxygen intake, reduce lactic acid levels and lower their heart rate.

“This was my first team event for six years and a great experience,” said William.

“I’m pleased with my continued progress this year and continue to make gains in strength, flexibility, speed endurance and race strategy – all resulting in new records and successful performances.”

His performance saw him claim eleventh place overall, ending the race as the second best performing Scotsman and claiming a Bronze medal as part of the Scottish team. William is now looking forward to future challenges including a gruelling 1000 mile race in Athens, Greece, which has attracted a multi-national field of entrants.

The PowerLung range is available online from www.fitnessmonitors.com and www.josmarc.com.
